Temperature Mapping Solutions

Understand Temperature Distribution Across Your Storage Environment

Temperature mapping records temperatures at several points in a space at the same time, so you can see how conditions vary across cold rooms, chambers, freezers and warehouses. POLWAX dataloggers provide the measurement points and recorded data for your mapping study.

  • Multi-channel & multi-logger options
  • −30 to +70 °C USB loggers
  • Freezer probe to −90 °C (PTE90)
  • PDF / CSV data export

Why Temperature Mapping Matters

One sensor rarely tells the whole story

Temperature inside a storage space is seldom uniform. Distance from cooling units and doors, shelf height, airflow, product load and outside conditions all create differences between locations. Mapping makes those differences visible.

  • Identify temperature variation

Find warmer and colder zones that a single fixed sensor may not detect.

  • Understand measurement locations

Learn where routine monitoring sensors and temperature-sensitive goods are best placed.

  • Review recorded data

A time-stamped record from every point gives an objective basis for decisions about the space.

Where Mapping Can Be Used

Typical environments for temperature mapping

These are general applications of temperature mapping. The right POLWAX logger for each depends on its temperature range and the study requirements.

  • Cold rooms & cold storage areas

Variation between racks, levels and the area near doors and cooling units.

  • Refrigerators & deep freezers

Distribution between shelves; freezers need loggers or probes rated for low temperatures.

  • Warehouses & storage chambers

Larger spaces where height, walls and seasonal conditions affect temperature.

  • Laboratories

Incubators, chambers and storage units holding temperature-sensitive materials.

  • Pharmaceutical & biotech storage

Stores and units for medicines, reagents and samples kept at defined temperatures.

  • Other controlled environments

Any space where a defined temperature has to be maintained across its whole volume.

Product suitability for a particular mapping study depends on the logger's range, accuracy, recording capacity and the requirements of your study plan, including any regulatory or validation requirements. Please contact our team to confirm the right instruments.

How a Mapping Study Works

A general six-stage workflow

The study is planned and evaluated by your team or your mapping service provider. POLWAX dataloggers provide the measurements and recorded data.

  1. Define the objective

Describe the environment, its intended temperature conditions and what the study needs to show.

  2. Identify measurement points

Plan locations across the space, such as corners, levels, near doors and near cooling units.

  3. Select loggers & ranges

Choose dataloggers whose range, accuracy and memory suit the environment and study length.

  4. Record temperatures

Set a common logging interval and record over the required study period.

  5. Review the data

Retrieve the data from each point and compare temperatures across locations and over time.

  6. Document findings

Record results and identify areas that need attention or ongoing monitoring.

Selection Considerations

What to consider when choosing loggers

The exact number of loggers and the mapping protocol depend on your environment and study plan. These factors help narrow down the choice.

  • Temperature range

The logger must cover the lowest and highest temperatures expected in the space.

    POLWAX: −30 to 70 °C (PT70, PTD50, PTD100) · down to −50 °C (PTE50 probe) or −90 °C (PTE90 probe) · MOTUS range depends on the connected sensor.

  • Measurement accuracy

Accuracy should suit how tightly the space is controlled and what the study needs to show.

    POLWAX: ±0.3 °C (PT70) · ±0.4 °C @ −10~40 °C (PTD50, PTD100) · ±0.4 °C (PTE) · ± 0.25 % of FS (MOTUS).

  • Number & placement of points

Larger or more complex spaces generally need more points across levels and zones.

POLWAX: several individual loggers, or one MOTUS with 8, 16 or 32 sensor channels.

  • Interval & study duration

Memory and battery must cover the whole study at the chosen interval.

Example: 33,000 points at a 5-minute interval is about 114 days of recording, subject to battery life (PTD50, PTE).

  • Data retrieval & reporting

Decide how data will be collected from every point and in which format it will be reviewed.

POLWAX: PDF / CSV over USB (USB loggers) · PDF / CSV / XLSX with POLWAX_View (MOTUS).

  • Suitability for the environment

Consider protection rating, power supply and how sensors or loggers will be placed.

POLWAX: battery-powered USB loggers, IP65 (PRH100: IP54) · MOTUS is portable with mains supply (220–240 VAC).

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is temperature mapping?

In general terms, temperature mapping is a study in which temperatures are recorded at several locations in a space at the same time, over a defined period, to show how temperature varies across that space.

Do POLWAX dataloggers carry out a complete mapping study automatically?

No. POLWAX product information describes measurement, recording and report export. Planning the study, choosing measurement points, analysing the data and documenting conclusions are carried out by your team or your mapping service provider.

How can we record many points at the same time?

You can place several individual dataloggers, such as PT70, PTD50 or PTD100, around the space with the same logging interval, or use one MOTUS logger with 8 (MR800), 16 (MR1600) or 32 (MR3200) channels and connected Pt100 or thermocouple sensors. Sensors are not listed in the MOTUS scope of supply, so please ask our team about suitable sensors.

Which logger can be used in freezers?

The PTE50 probe measures from −50 °C to 70 °C and the PTE90 probe from −90 °C to 70 °C. MOTUS loggers can use Pt100 or thermocouple sensors; the usable range then depends on the sensor selected. The PT70, PTD50 and PTD100 cover −30 to 70 °C.

How long can a logger record?

It depends on memory, logging interval and battery. For example, the PTD50 and PTE loggers store up to 33,000 points, which at a 5-minute interval is about 114 days; their battery life is specified at up to 2 years (1 year storage / 1 year useful life) at 25 °C with a 5-minute interval.

Can we measure humidity during the study as well?

Yes, with the humidity versions: PRH70, PRH50 and PRH100 record temperature and relative humidity.

In which formats is the data available?

The USB loggers provide PDF and/or CSV reports. MOTUS loggers produce .PDF, .CSV or .XLSX reports with POLWAX_View software. CSV and XLSX files can be opened in spreadsheet software for your own analysis.

Will the study meet regulatory requirements?

POLWAX product information does not state compliance with specific guidelines or regulations. Regulatory acceptance depends on your study protocol, execution and documentation. Please contact our team if your quality system has particular requirements for instruments or certificates.
